Most of us have strong memories associated with particular songs. It is not unusual to be transported to an event, a place, a moment when you hear a song playing on the radio and time seems to stop as you relive that memory. You may want to consider creating a playlist of special songs that remind you of your loved one or that is specifically curated to uplift you in difficult moments, or if you find it helpful, songs that will help you grieve and mourn. Sometimes, religious or spiritual songs or chants may be just what is needed to carry you through a challenging day, or songs that were once sung and shared with loved ones can bring comforting memories.
For children, it may be helpful to create a family playlist. Among many other resources and supports, the National Grief Center for Children and Families – Dougy Center has a downloadable form to help you do just that: https://www.dougy.org/activities/create-a-family-playlist.
We know that music has a way of transcending words and arriving at the heart of an emotion and this may help with providing a way to cope and connect with the loved one and each other as you support family and friends through this challenging time.
